Men can lose weight faster than women. It can be seen when you are participated in a weight lose programme with your male friend. It is not fair sometimes. The reason for the easier decreases in weight lose is because of the muscle. Men have more muscle and muscle is the “workhorse” of the body.
Although women weight the same and felt slimmer when they were 35 years old, the feeling will be different when they were 45 years old. They feel “fat” and this is not because of mentally state or social surrounding. It might be the truth which means they are more “fat” than they used to be. What you see on the scales are not the only measures of what is happening in your body.
For example, Jane who is 35 years old weighed 63 kilos. 23 percent of her body is actually fat (23 to 33 percent of body fat is considered a healthy rate for women ages 40 to 59 according to the experts). Hence, 15 kilos out of 63 kilos were fat, while the remaining kilos which are 48 kilos are consisted of bone, muscle, water, and internal organs.
Consequently, Jane’s body fat had increased from 23 percent to 30 percent by the time she was 48 years old. She had gained 5 more kilos which is 20 kilos of fat. Instead, her body had lost about 5 pounds of muscle. Still, her weight remained the same.
Two things may occur when women gain fat and lose muscle:
Fat are transparent. They will take up more space unlike muscle that is dense. Thus, even though you are not gaining any weight, you may look bigger and your clothing size may increase.
Your metabolism will slow and you will burn fewer calories because muscle burn more calories than fat. It can contribute to weight gain if you do not make any changes in your calorie consumption and there will also be a big difference in the outcome on your metabolism as muscle burns 7 times more energy than fat.
Jane is really careful on her food she takes but unfortunately, she is not able to lose weight. The important factor is the amount of lean body mass that determines the rate in which the calories burned. So, metabolism drops if lean body mass drops.
Women can burn the calories by 30 calories a day equal to every pound of muscle lost. She could burn 300 fewer calories each day or a massive of 2 100 fewer calories each week if she loses 10 pounds of muscle in 3 decades.
So, she could have lost 15 pounds of muscle and burn 450 fewer calories each and everyday by the time she celebrates her 55th birthday.
Therefore, it is important for Annete and other women in their forties or fifties to maintain the muscle mass when they grow older. There is so much of lean muscle because it is an important matter.
A normal weight woman will burn the calories muscle of about 40 percent of the body mass, meaning 56 pounds for a 140-pound woman like Janet. In conclusion, energy is a major factor.
Here are two good news for women: Firstly, women can boost their metabolic engines with weight training and other forms of exercise that builds muscle, because muscle mass is linked directly to metabolic rate. Secondly, women can encourage the muscle development when exercise by eating the right source of lean protein.
