Curling up in your favorite chair with a new novel is one of the few quite joys in life.  If you are indulging in a bag a chips or plate of cookies while taking in that book you could certainly be adding to your waistline, but that is not what is referred to here.  The reading that is most likely to pack on the pounds is the kind that you may think is helping you.

eating while readingEvery year there is some new fad in the dieting world that requires reading the latest book. When you get to the book store, there will be entire shelves dedicated to dieting and weight loss.  Go to any supermarket check-out line and you will see countless magazine covers touting various claims such as:  “Lose 10 Pounds This Week”, “Think Yourself Thin”, or “Miracle Smoothie Diet” Then there is the all of the time spent finding out which cookies are three calories less than the Oreos that you really want.

Once you arrive home, and want to unwind while watching television, there are ads for all of next week’s talk shows that promise to reveal the five mystic things making you fat and the next magic extract to shed five pounds. Now take into account all the internet articles that tease you with some new weight-loss super food when you log on each day.  Not to mention the website ads that flash with dramatic before and after photos that make you wonder if it is even the same person.  All of these distracting you from any actual work that you meant to accomplish.  Someone concerned about their weight could spend days’ or weeks’ worth of time pouring over these sources of information.

The simple fact has never changed though: the more you eat, the more you have to move.  Everyone knows deep down that this is the truth. When all the books, websites and television info is boiled down it always comes down to that one idea. If what goes in is more than what you use, you will gain weight.  It is a truth that is easier said than done, admittedly.  Like many other things we know to be true, such as spending more than you make will lead to a bad credit car loan or bankruptcy, it is easier to wish for a magic cure than to do the right thing.  Living within your means is not as much fun as going shopping whenever you want.   Just like hitting the gym may not be as enjoyable as the piece of double chocolate cake.   However, if you took all the time you spent reading the latest diet fad book, watching the next talk show episode or clicking on miracle drug internet ads and put it in to working out you will definitely see results rather than just hoping for them.
