Do you ever feel out of sorts but just can’t get a handle on what’s wrong? Maybe you’re experiencing chronic fatigue, dizziness, forgetfulness, achiness, or all of the above. It’s scary because you know something’s off but you’ve gone through so many different tests and the big things have all been ruled out. Have you considered talking with your physician about checking to see if you have a food allergy or intolerance? It makes sense because the food you consume is the fuel that makes your own personal engine run smoothly or badly. Here are some of the most common and debilitating troubles with food, though with any intolerance or allergy you may find your body reacting in unique ways. One of the best ways to pinpoint your triggers is to go through a food elimination diet, but until then have a look at some of these common dietary ailments.
Lactose intolerance are incredibly common and have received more and more attention over the years. Some symptoms of a lactose intolerance include abdominal pain, gas, bloating, irritable bowel and nausea. Tests for diagnosis can range from Hydrogen breath test to testing stool samples but don’t forget that even if you have a borderline allergy or intolerance it doesn’t mean you won’t feel its effects. The good news is that physicians and nutritionists are becoming more versed in the condition and can help aid patients in need. And because so many people are afflicted more and more restaurants and food distributors are providing delicious lactose-free options.
Gluten intolerance and allergies are also prime examples of how even mild symptoms can make life difficult. Celiac Disease can have an extremely negative impact on one’s heath, with symptoms including severe abdominal pain, tingling in hands and feet, depression, diarrhea and in some cases even seizures. With Celiac Disease even the smallest crumb containing gluten can trigger an attack. And while others may simply have a gluten intolerance instead of an allergy those symptoms can include fuzzy thinking, joint and muscle pain and extreme fatigue. Gluten is not only found in beer and bread, it is also used as a thickener for items such as sauces and soups, making it very difficult to avoid at times. Again, thankfully a number of food makers are seeing the need for tasty gluten-free foods and it’s becoming much easier to comply with such dietary needs.
Those with peanut or nut allergies can sometimes have symptoms as severe as Anaphylaxis, which includes throat swelling and low blood pressure, and in some cases death. And one of the major difficulties with a peanut allergy is that even if you aren’t eating peanuts or nuts you may accidentally consume a food that was made in a processing plant that processes nut products.
Even Soy, once considered a terrific meat substitute, can sometimes cause hormonal problems.
So what does this all mean? First off it means that it’s more imperative than ever to listen to your body; when something isn’t right don’t stop until you find the answer. And as trying as an allergy or intolerance can sometimes be there are thankfully more and more resources out there to help you get your body back on track. Keep looking and soon you’ll find the answer.
