Digestive Heatlh

It is estimated that millions of Americans suffer from some sort of digestive issue, in fact to be a little closer to the figure, it is roughly over 70 million. This type of problem ranges from different types of disorders from the severe to the less severe, from IBS to a little diarrhea, many of us suffer from this. If you ask me personally, I feel that these conditions are one of the most annoying of disorders as it will give you a lot of discomfort and it does seem like something which is not that severe. I am talking about simple loose bowel movements and nothing of the more severe sort but even those types of disorders are not deadly and could be either easily prevented or treated. However needless to say, just like any minor disorder, it also can turn deadly quickly. You have to make sure that even if is just a simple loose bowel movement that it still should be treated or at least do something that may help alleviate it and fiber is one of those that may help.

What is Fiber and What Does it Do?

high fiber foodsFiber, simply put, is an indigestible substance that is mostly found in the outer layer of plants. It is considered as a carbohydrate however unlike normal carbohydrates it passes through the stomach completely unchanged and when in the body it absorbs other substances around it. It is not broken down for nutrient absorption and it is not used for energy. Its importance in the digestive process of human beings though lies in some of its characteristics such as influencing the digestive process from the beginning up to the very end. We however will get the main benefits from fiber being able to fill the stomach and make you feel full longer as it has the ability to absorb other substances around it and expand. With this other benefits arise like slowing down the digestion process and allowing less sugar spikes in the body which in turn will help lower the risk of diabetes. It also has the ability to absorb cholesterol and preventing it from being absorbed by the body. When it is broken down in the colon, it will also help in initiating a cleansing effect which will keep the colon healthy.

Too Much and Too Little

Like most stories there are usually two sides and the same goes with fiber, so we will be able to know what will happen when we eat fiber let us look at what happens when we eat either too much or too little. Too much fiber can cause bloating and gas. In more severe cases it may cause constipation especially if there is not enough water to bind to and loosen it. If too little is taken, based on what it can do above, it will cause elevated blood pressure, increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, in recent studies, it may also help in preventing other cancers and not just colon cancer as fiber has already proven itself to be essential to colon health.
